A 20mph speed limit is set to be introduced on several roads in north-east Fife.
Councillors on the North-East Fife area committee have approved plans to reduce the limit at a number of locations.
The move aligns with a Scottish Government initiative to reduce speed limits on all appropriate urban roads by the end of 2025.
It follows similar moves elsewhere in the Kingdom.
20mph limits to be introduced on north-east Fife roads
Changes will be made on the following roads:
- Dairsie – Main Street and Station Road: 20mph speed limits will be introduced with the introduction of appropriate 40mph speed limits on the A91 approaches.
- Newport-on-Tay – Cupar Road and Kirk Road: 20mph speed limits will be introduced on both roads.
- East Neuk – A917 and B913 St Andrews Road: 20mph speed limits will be introduced on the A917 through Elie, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Cellardyke, along with the B913 St Andrews Road at Anstruther. Meanwhile, 40mph speed limits will also be introduced on the A917 approaches to Elie.
The timescales for the changes have not been confirmed.
Councillor Jonny Tepp, committee convener, says the new speed limits are the “best way to improve road safety and reduce the number of casualties on our roads”.
He added: “The evidence is clear that a pedestrian hit at 20mph is less likely to be seriously or fatally injured than if hit at 30mph.
“We want to make our towns and villages safer for everyone, especially our children and older or more vulnerable adults.
“Reducing the limits ensures that drivers have more time to respond to unexpected events and significantly reduces the risk of fatal accidents.”
In addition, a limited waiting parking restriction will be introduced on High Street, Elie, at the request of the community council.
A limited one-hour waiting parking restriction outside 42-50 High Street will operate from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm.
A list of roads in Dunfermline set to get 20mph speed limits was released earlier this month.
