River Island stores in Kirkcaldy and Perth are set to close under a plan to shut 33 of the fashion outlet’s stores across the UK.
The company’s proposed restructuring plan was revealed on Friday.
It said “underperforming UK stores” would shut in January 2026.
These include the premises at High Street in Kirkcaldy and St John’s Shopping Centre in Perth.
Stores in Dundee, Dunfermline and Stirling are not on the list of proposed closures.
River Island has also asked for landlords to reduce the rent on 71 of its stores to ensure they are “financially viable”.
A court hearing on August 7 will decide whether the restructuring plan can go ahead.
The retailer has not confirmed how many jobs are at risk or which stores will be impacted by the rent reductions.
It has blamed the closures on changing patterns in shopping behaviour, citing the move away from the High Street to online shopping.
River Island bosses also admitted experiencing a “period of financial underperformance”.
River Island stores in Kirkcaldy and Perth stores earmarked for closure
River Island currently employs around 5,500 staff in 230 outlets in the UK and Ireland.
Ben Lewis, CEO of River Island, said: “The well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online has left the business with a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers’ needs.
“The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden.
“We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability.
“Recent improvements in our fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing very positive results.
“But is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island’s future as a profitable retail business.
“We regret any job losses as a result of store closures, and we will try to keep these to a minimum.”
