Readers of the The Courier have reacted angrily to the revelation that Dundee City Council’s chief executive recieved a bumper pay rise last year.
This week we reported how five senior local authority officials saw increases in their six-figure salaries in the 2024-25 financial year.
This included council chief Greg Colgan, who pocketed £179,966 – which includes a £2,748 remuneration for election duties.
Mr Colgan received £170,049 in 2023-24 – meaning he got a 6% pay rise.
Judy Dobbie, who heads the beleaguered Leisure and Culture Dundee, also saw a 4% wage increase.
She received £125,210 in the last financial year – up from the £120,850 salary she took home in 2023-24.
‘City of Discovery going downhill faster than Eddie the Eagle’
However, news of the wage increases has been met with ire from our readers.
Commenting on The Courier website, one wrote: “Totally bizarre!
“Look at the state of the Dundee streets at the moment with rubbish and litter due to them being short of staff (apparently) to clean them.
“All the services that we have lost, Caird Park Golf Club especially.
“It’s the wrong employees that are getting these pay hikes – it certainly shouldn’t be the pen pushers.”
Another wrote: “Can’t believe they have been given pay rises considering the state of Dundee and the closures of golf courses etc.
“They should be totally ashamed of themselves considering the current climate. ‘City of Discovery’ going downhill faster than Eddie the Eagle.”
Frustration voiced on social media
Frustrated Dundonians also made their feelings known on social media.
Writing on The Evening Telegraph’s Facebook, Tom O’ Neill wrote: “A disgrace when golf courses have been abandoned and nothing in it’s place. So much has gone.”
And Marion Fraser said: “Totally obscene, shutting golf courses libraries, community hubs.
“The city is a mess, don’t know how they can justify this. Totally disgusting.”
Kenneth Simpson added: “Not even as much as hanging basket in the town centre these days.
“Everywhere is a mess and just left to look untidy, can’t even afford to hose/jet wash down the city centre streets.”
