The harbour trust has given an update following a devastating storm in October 2023.

The popular St Andrews Harbour Gala is cancelled this year as £3 million worth of repair work continues.

The harbour area suffered devastating damage during storms in October 2023.

And gala organisers say their time and effort has gone on the ongoing restoration.

However, they have given an assurance the cancellation is not permanent.

Harbour trustee Douglas Mundie said: “We’ve sadly had to put the gala preparations to one side just now.

“The gala is a hugely popular event in St Andrews and it’s always heartwarming to see the local community and visitors come together and enjoy the fun.

“For that reason, we’d like to reassure locals this is just a hiatus and we hope to host a gala again in the future.”

St Andrews Harbour Gala is traditionally held on a Saturday in July.

Meanwhile, the harbour trust has provided an update on its extensive repairs programme.

Some major St Andrews Harbour repairs still unfunded

The 14th-Century pier reopened in time for St Andrews University’s annual Gaudie Walk on April 30.

The event sees students in red gowns hold a torchlit procession along the pier ahead of a May Day dip.

And this year’s went ahead following a 16-month closure and the completion of £2m worth of repairs.

Mr Mundie says it is wonderful to see people enjoying it again.

“The newly resurfaced area, such as the path and picnic area, have also been well received,” he said.

A major fundraising drive is still open to raise cash for further work.

Despite the submission of major grant applications, it is thought there will still be a £500,000 shortfall.

This means major engineering repairs to restore the pier’s connection to the cliffs remains unfunded.
