A Perth councillor has quit the Conservative group as he faces a criminal investigation.
Andy Chan, member for Perth City South, is being probed over an incident said to have occurred in August 2017.
No further details have been revealed.
Mr Chan, who was elected to represent the Perth and Kinross Council ward in 2022, now sits as an independent councillor after resigning from the Tories last month.
Andy Chan’s ‘personal decision’ to leave Conservative group
The Courier asked Mr Chan, 42, why he had quit the group.
He replied: “I have made the personal decision to step down from the Scottish Conservatives.
“I will continue to serve as an independent councillor and remain fully committed to representing and supporting our local community.”
Leader of the Conservative group on the council, Councillor John Duff said: “Councillor Chan has submitted his resignation from the Scottish Conservative party advising that it is for personal reasons.
“Consequently, Andy is no longer a member of the Conservative group at the council and now sits as an independent councillor.”
A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: “We have been made aware that Councillor Chan is now sitting as an independent councillor and our website was updated to reflect this earlier in the week.”
A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “A standard prosecution report has been received from Police Scotland in relation to a 42-year-old man and an incident said to have occurred in August 2017.”
Councillor born and brought up in Perth
Mr Chan was born and bred in Perth, attending Craigie Primary and Perth High School.
He worked in the family takeaway business, Chans in Glengarry Road, until it closed.
At the time of his selection for the Perth City South seat, Mr Chan said it was a great place to live.
He said: “I know Perth City South and the communities which make this such a great place in which to live and work.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to stand for election in May. I run my business locally and I am involved in lots of local community groups.
“Perth is a fantastic place in which to live and work. It’s at the heart of Scotland and we need to grab every opportunity to bring jobs and prosperity to the city.”
