St Andrews University has released images of how a former Madras College site could be transformed if major redevelopment plans are approved.
The university submitted proposals to Fife Council for the old school on the town’s South Street this week.
The plans involve renovating the historic school quad and constructing new buildings on the site.
If approved, ÂŁ6 million of work will begin this summer on stonework, roof repairs and window replacement.
St Andrews University reveals major plans for ‘New College’ at school site
New College will be home to the new St Andrews Business School, comprising the Schools of Economics and Finance, and Management.
It will also accommodate the university’s School of International Relations.
The ÂŁ140m development will retain the facade of the building as well as the former school quad, which will be protected by a glass roof to preserve the sandstone pillars beneath.
Images released by the university show how the site could look under designs by architectural firm WilkinsonEyre.
In addition to classrooms, meeting rooms and conference areas, New College will feature community spaces including a cafe and changing places toilet facilities.
Members of the public were given the opportunity to comment on the university’s proposals in November last year.
Demolition works to remove dilapidated 1960s and 1970s buildings to the rear of the South Street site were undertaken in 2022 and early 2023.
Principal Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, who is spearheading the project, said: “New College is part of our ÂŁ300 million ‘making waves’ fundraising campaign in support of our world-leading ambitions.
“Despite the challenging financial circumstances currently facing the higher education sector, St Andrews recognises the importance of investing in projects like New College that will not only create an inclusive and inspiring educational space but also bring tangible benefits for the St Andrews and Fife community, as well as wider society.”
The former Madras College building on Kilrymont Road has been redeveloped into student accommodation since pupils moved to a purpose-built secondary school at Bell Brae in 2021.
