A Dundee mum has seen her Single Parent Festivals grow from a local idea launched during Covid to a national event.

Elaine Harris has expanded the initiative to England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The mum-of-two said she began the festival to help build a supportive community for single parents and their children.

The camping-style festival runs over five nights, with the Scottish edition being held at Douglaswood, near Monikie, from July 11.

Next month it will be held in Leigh, Staffordshire.

Elaine’s summer festival has come a long way since 2022.

Dundee mum’s focus is on low-cost camping event

The 44-year-old said: “We are a social family, but we’ve struggled in the past to find non-commercial, family-friendly events where costs don’t spiral with all the add-ons.

“After speaking to other single parents, many admitted they had never been on holiday alone before.

“They were worried about sitting by themselves while others were in groups.

“That’s where the idea for Single Parent Festivals came from – a space where all activities are included in the ticket, there are no vendors, and we keep prices as low as possible for everyone.”

The festival offers a wide range of inclusive activities for all ages – from toddlers to teens and adults – including musical performances and laser tag.

There will also be a dedicated camping area for families with additional needs such as autism and ADHD

Elaine added: “It’s a place where people can come together and let their kids play to their heart’s content.

“We want to remove as much stress as possible for parents, so not only the kids but the adults can have fun too.

“Everyone’s in the same situation, which makes it easier for people to chat, connect, and make friends.

“We’re already building an online community of attendees so they can get to know one another before they arrive.”

Originally from Forfar, Elaine is a former model and was a finalist in Top Model UK 2014.

She has also raised thousands for charity over the years through fundraising challenges, including embarking on an epic trip to Australia with no money.
