‘Pieces of cars were flying everywhere’: Man in Ninewells amid shock as A90 van causes seven-vehicle crash in Angus

A man has been taken to hospital following a crash involving seven vehicles after a van was seen travelling the wrong way “at high speeds” on one of Angus’ busiest roads.

Emergency crews were called to the A90 two miles south of Stracathro near the Brechin turnoff at around 7.20pm on Wednesday following reports of the crash.

BREAKING: Seven vehicles involved in A90 smash after van travels in wrong direction and crashes into reservation

Police Scotland confirmed the driver of the van was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment after the vehicle, which was travelling south on the northbound carriageway, collided with the central reservation.

It is understood two other vehicles were directly involved in the initial collision, with a further four affected by the large amount of debris left strewn across the road. It is not thought anyone was seriously injured.

Caitlin Craik, 18, from Montrose, was driving with her boyfriend Harvey McMillan, also 18, at the time of the incident and spoke of her shock at seeing headlights coming towards them as she began to overtake another vehicle.

She said: “We were driving to Laurencekirk from Dundee and I was overtaking a car on the dual carriageway 10 minutes away from the junction at Laurencekirk when I saw headlights coming towards us.

“I had to quickly pull into the other lane to avoid hitting the van. The weirdest part was that the van showed no sign of slowing down when it was directly in front of us, it’s just lucky I reacted in time.

“We both managed to get away unhurt and managed to keep the car on the road. I’m really glad no one was seriously hurt considering the speed they were going. Me and my boyfriend are still pretty shocked.”

Nash Singer, from Westhill, Aberdeenshire, arrived at the scene moments after the van hit the central reservation.

He said: “I had to swerve through cars smashed in the middle of the road and four cars, including the van, still facing south bound in the verge. Pieces of cars were flying everywhere and heading down the dual carriageway.”

Police Scotland confirmed diversions remained in place for more than two hours following the smash but the road was reopened shortly before 10pm.

A spokesman said: “A van was travelling south on the northbound carriageway and collided with the central reservation and two vehicles.

“There were another four vehicles involved, so seven in total. Thankfully there were only minor injuries. Diversions were in place because there was a lot of debris.”
