Pick a project: Voting open on how £260,000 Angus community fund will be dished out

There is £260,000 up for grabs through the Angus Council participatory budgeting fund.

Angus communities can now cast a vote on how £260,000 will be shared out on local projects.

But it’s the last time the council will use the current system to distribute the participatory budgeting pot after hefty criticism of the “flawed” process.

The scheme aims to put power in the hands of the people to decide where money is spent.

This year more than 90 Angus projects came forward for a slice of the funding pie.

And the total value of their schemes was almost four times the available £250k.

Almost 70 competing projects

A final list of 68 ideas has gone forward for the online public vote.

It started on Monday and runs until Sunday November 21.

Contenders include everything from a plan to revamp Carnoustie’s fourth golf course – the free-to-play five-hole Nestie – to a barista project for Arbroath High School youngsters.

Winter gritting of the Angus glens to boxing holiday clubs in Brechin are also among the competing projects.

The Choice for Angus fund is split into four areas:

Arbroath

Brechin and Montrose

Carnoustie, Monifieth & Sidlaw

Forfar & Kirriemuir

So each area will receive £65,000 to be spent on local projects.

Claims over lack of consultation

Critics say the scheme was not promoted widely enough, meaning some groups could miss out.

Carnoustie councillor David Cheape suggested suspending it for a year.

“It’s flawed for the second year in succession and we can’t have a third go as a council and get it wrong,” he said.

“Many groups were not aware of this and it’s almost as if they are being excluded from it through lack of information or lack of knowledge.”

Councillor Angus Macmillan Douglas said: “I think we all accept this wasn’t a perfect process.

“But councillors had a responsibility to ensure their communities knew about it.

“And if they didn’t they shouldn’t start blaming others.”
