Dunnottar Castle ban for “noisy” drones

A Mearns castle has banned drones flying above the attraction for safety reasons.

Dunnottar Castle at Stonehaven has banned the unmanned aerial vehicles for the safety of those visiting one of the region’s most popular tourist venues.

Jim Wands, custodian of the castle, said: “We enjoy the drone footage that people take at the castle and are delighted when they share it with us.

“However we would ask them to only take footage when the castle is closed so they don’t spoil other people’s enjoyment when they are visiting the castle.

“If they are taking off close to the castle they can be quite dangerous and we have had drones run out of battery and land in the castle in the past.

“What we are saying is that if you want to use a drone use it when the castle is closed so it does not endanger people visiting.

“Another problem with drones is that they can be quite noisy and for people visiting it can be a bit annoying.”

He added: “Another reason we have had to ban the use of drones during opening hours is that it is actually illegal to fly them in congested areas according to the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority).”

Jim has said people need to act responsibly when using them.

He said: “We have used drones in the past rather than using something more expensive, but it has been used when the castle was shut in order to prevent people getting upset with it in the air.”

Signs have been put up around the attraction warning of the new rules.
