Carnoustie High School will be transformed into ‘Tee in the Park’ at this summer’s Open golf championship.

The Open camping village will operate from July 15 to 22 and include a range of two, four and six person tents that are already pitched and ready for campers, plus inflatable camp beds for each guest.

There will be a football pitch at the camp site.

Golf’s governing body has decided to channel the modern music festival on a sporting scale since the campsite was first introduced back at Royal Troon in 2016.

Last year 3,000 campers took advantage of the initiative when it returned at Royal Birkdale and pitches sold out on the Friday and Saturday of the championship.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, said: “We are delighted that The Open camping village has proven to be very popular and a cost effective accommodation option which has increased access to the Championship for families and young people.

“There will be a fantastic atmosphere at Carnoustie throughout the week of The Open as thousands of people converge on the town for a true celebration of golf and we are expecting high demand from spectators looking to book places at the camping village.”

Kids go free at the site.

Shower and toilet block facilities will be situated throughout the campsite and there will be football pitches and other games available for campers to use.

Youth ticket holders aged 16 to 24 are eligible to camp for free. Juniors with kids go free tickets are also eligible to stay for free with an accompanying adult ticket holder.

Adult ticket holders can stay at the village from £40 per night.

The R&A said the camping village was introduced to increase access to The Open for families and young people by lowering the overall cost of attending.

30,000 golf fans under the age of 25 attended The Open in 2017, including 15,000 juniors who attended free of charge as part of the Kids go Free initiative.

More than 300,000 juniors have attended The Open free of charge since the Kids go Free initiative was introduced at Royal Troon in 1997.

It is 12 years since the event was last held in Carnoustie.

Irishman Padraig Harrington triumphed in a play-off against Sergio Garcia in 2007.

Carnoustie will host The Open for just the third time in 19 years this summer.

The links returned to the Open rota in 1999 after a 24-year-gap.
