Two, three and four-wheeled rarities will bring buyers flocking to Angus

An array of automotive antiques including three and four-wheeled rarities is lined up to attract bidders to an auction this weekend.

Buyers from throughout the country and across the Irish Sea are expected to flock to the Bridge View House base of Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club, near Glamis for the latest of their regular sales, with hundreds of lots on offer.

Having fulfilled the long-held ambition of building a purpose-built headquarters to display and work on restoration projects, the base close to the castle has also become the regular destination for enthusiasts looking to bid on something unusual in the twice-yearly auctions.

Expected highlights of Saturday’s sale include an unusual three-wheeled Gunsmith light tractor from 1947, which worked the fields of Perthshire before going on to vintage show ‘retirement’ around the country.

One of numerous garden tractors built by small manufacturers after the war to satisfy demand from small farm operations, the unusual design allowed the operator to sit on the tractor and steer via a front tricycle wheel rather than walking behind.

SVVC chair Allan Burt said: “This was restored by someone in Alyth and has been rallied many times with great success.

“This particular tractor also comes with a Gibson trailer built in the 1920s so the successful bidder will be getting a very good combination,” he added.

One of the top-priced lots should be a rare 1930 Austin 12/4 with what is believed to be a one-off style body created by coachbuilder A C Penman of Dumfries, which is expected to top five-figures.

It is fully restored and ready to drive away, but those looking for a winter project might be considering a bid on an unusual Morris Special or 1932 four-seat Singer Junior tourer, both requiring work to bring them back to usability.

Motorcyles, mopeds and pushbikes also feature in the sale, along with hundreds of smaller automotive related lots.

The Angus club is one of the biggest on the country and organises the summer Scottish Transport Extravaganza in the grounds of Glamis Castle, which this year drew a record-breaking entry of more than 1,600 vehicles and a bumper crowd to the sun-kissed 44th annual event.

Plans are already well advanced for the 2019 event on July 13/14.
