Police carrying out a routine patrol on a busy dual carriageway which cuts through Angus recorded a driver travelling dangerously at 118 miles per hour.
The officers in an unmarked car fitted with CCTV first noted Josh Carstairs’ Volkswagen Bora travelling at “excessive speed “on the A92 Arbroath to Dundee Road shortly before 8pm on August 7 last year.
Depute fiscal Bill Kermode told Forfar Sheriff Court the officers followed the 22-year-old driver to measure his speed.
He said the traffic flow was light when Carstairs was first detected driving at more than 99 and a half miles an hour.
He said: “The accused then appeared to travel faster.”
After following him for a further half a mile the officers recorded an average speed of 118 miles per hour.
When stopped Carstairs was shown the reading on the screen and was cautioned and charged.
Carstairs, of Newton of Balcormo, Arncroach, Fife, pled guilty to driving dangerously and at a speed of 118 miles within a 70mph speed limit on August 7 2018 on the A92 Dundee to Arbroath road near Ardestie.
Defence solicitor Douglas McConnell told the court his client had health issues and had three penalty points on his licence for a previous matter.
He said: “There is no excuse for that speed. He accepted his guilt at intermediate diet.
“Any financial penalty will hit him hard.
“He is in court today with his mother. Both he and his mother wish to draw a line under the matter.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray told Carstairs he had to ban him from driving on an ad interim basis as he had admitted driving dangerously.
He warned: “Any penalty I impose must be significant and in proportion to the offence.”
He deferred sentence until February 28 for the preparation of a criminal justice and social work report.
