A Fife man spent Christmas in custody following a disturbance in Leven town centre that left two people seriously injured.
Mark Andrew McNeill, of Leven, appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Christmas Eve charged with assaulting a man to his severe injury and the danger of his life.
The 22-year-old was also charged with assaulting a second man to his severe injury.
McNeill faced three further charges alleging that he assaulted a police officer, resisted arrest and behaved in a threatening or abusive manner.
He made no plea to the petition against him and the case was continued for further examination.
He was remanded in custody and is expected to make a second appearance in court within the next eight days.
McNeill was arrested following a serious late-night disturbance in Branch Street, in the Shorehead area of Leven, at 11.40pm on Sunday.
Police said two men, aged 25 and 28, were taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment in the wake of the incident, with one of them said to be suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Police would not elaborate on their conditions although the area at the southern end of the High Street, adjacent to the bus station, was cordoned off for much of Monday as a major investigation got under way.
A forensics tent was set up and officers were seen taking photographs of the scene.
Witnesses reported a large amount of blood on the road.
Drivers at the nearby bus station and taxi rank were also asked for information as further evidence was sought.
A police statement said: “Police Scotland can confirm that inquiries are under way following an incident which took place in Branch Street in Leven around 11.39pm on Sunday December 22 2019.
“Two men, a 25-year-old and a 28-year-old sustained serious injuries during a disturbance.”
