Man remanded over claims he stole alcohol from Dundee hotel and intentionally wet himself
James Donoghue is alleged to have stolen a crate of alcohol from the Queens Hotel.

A man has been remanded in custody ahead of a trial over claims he stole a crate of alcohol from a hotel and later intentionally urinated on himself.

James Donoghue, 38, appeared in the dock at Dundee Sheriff Court to deny claims he stole booze from the Queens Hotel on the Nethergate on November 16 last year.

Donoghue, a prisoner at HMP Perth, has also denied having a pointed or bladed article, namely a knife, on South Tay Street on the same date.

Prosecutors also allege that he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm by repeatedly shouting and swearing, acting aggressively and repeatedly uttering threats to kill police officers.

He is further accused of intentionally urinating on himself and within an observation cell at Bell Street Police Station, and repeatedly spitting.

Donoghue appeared before Sheriff Lorna Drummond without a solicitor.

Prosecutors moved to oppose bailing him prior to his trial – and Donoghue was warned he would likely be remanded in custody for an extended period of time before his trial due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Following a short adjournment, during which time he was given the chance to consult a solicitor, Donoghue opted to continue to represent himself, and chose not to seek bail.

The sheriff told the accused: “We’re not having trials right now so now we’re asking to fix new dates for trial.

“Are you making an application for bail?”

Donoghue replied: “I didn’t try (to get a solicitor). I’m not really happy with getting a duty solicitor. No, I’ll just leave it.”

Sheriff Drummond fixed a trial date for July 28, with a further first diet on June 16. She remanded Donoghue in custody in the meantime.
