Extra prison time for Perth convict caught with four illegal ‘cell’ phones

A cocaine dealer who was caught naked in HMP Perth trying to hide an illicit phone between his legs has had another year added to his sentence.

Now at HMP Shotts, drug dealer Callum Menzies previously admitted hiding four mobiles in his cell at the Edinburgh Road jail on October 29 in 2020.

Officers had come in to search his cell and caught the 39-year-old without any clothes on and placing a mobile between his legs.

He handed the device over to officers, who found another mobile fixed to the underside of the sink with Velcro.

A further two devices were discovered in a soap box in a shelving unit.

The search came less than two months after Menzies had been caught with an illicit SIM card in his cell.

He was moved into a different cell and lost privileges for three days.

The same punishment was applied – for five weeks – as disciplinary action for the four phones.

Phones were to ‘contact girlfriend’

Menzies was jailed at Glasgow Sheriff Court in July 2020 for four years and eight months after being convicted of being concerned in the supply of cocaine.

His earliest date of release had been March 2024.

At Perth Sheriff Court, Menzies was brought from prison to have an extra year added to his sentence by Sheriff Euan Duthie.

Solicitor George Mathers explained his client had used the phones for “nothing sinister” but to contact his girlfriend.

He said: “He has been disciplined.

“He does have a record.

“He fully appreciates he’s got to be punished for the indictment matter.

“He’s already serving a lengthy sentence.”

All of the phones and SIM card  been forfeited to the Crown.
