An 18th birthday celebration in Perth descended into violence when the teenager hospitalised a man in a street attack.

Lee Simpson previously admitted punching a man to the ground, causing him to strike his head, in Perth city centre.

David Legge had to be taken to hospital for x-rays after being attacked by July 26 2020.

Simpson, now 19, of Broompark Crescent in Murthly, admitted leaving Mr Wade injured.

Happened as lockdown eased

At the previous hearing in Perth Sheriff Court, fiscal depute David Currie explained that earlier that night, they had been drinking in a number of Perth pubs, latterly The Bank at the corner of Mill Street and South Methven Street.

On Thursday, Sheriff Euan Duthie fined him £420.

His solicitor Louisa Wade said it was the first time Simpson had been out in some months as lockdown restrictions were just easing.

She said the attack stemmed from verbal exchanges made between groups of friends.

“He went for the complainer, punching him and knocking on the ground.

“The man appeared to knock his head on the pavement.”

Taken to hospital

The court previously heard that at 12.50am, Mr Legge and a friend bumped into Simpson on the corner of Mill Street and South Methven Street.

Simpson began making “provocative and rude” comments towards Mr Legge’s friend and was challenged to stop.

“The accused immediately became aggressive,” Mr Currie said.

“He thereafter began to punch the complainer to the head, causing him to fall to the ground.”

The attack was seen by various witnesses and one woman was heard to shout “stop it Lee”.

Police were contacted and Mr Legge was taken to hospital by paramedics.

X-rays showed no breaks or fractures but he did sustain bruising to his eye.
