A grandmother from Fife left her passenger seriously injured when she lost control and rolled her car several times in a field on her way to a Perth Prison visit.
Doreen Baxter, 56, tried to overtake a slower moving van and spun out of control into a field, rolling repeatedly before coming to a halt.
Baxter, from Cardenden, was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £600 when she admitted causing serious injury by driving carelessly on June 6 last year.
Sheriff Alison McKay said: “You caused injuries to someone else, a passenger in your car.
“I am being told that this was an error of judgment.”
The fire service said at the time cutting equipment was used to free the casualties from the car.
Injuries
Perth Sheriff Court was told the grandmother-of-ten was driving to see her son in Perth Prison with a woman and child in the car when she crashed off the B9097 near Kinross.
Fiscal depute Elizabeth Hodgson told the court: “There was a van with a restricted speed limit driving in front of the accused.
“It appeared she was trying to overtake the slower moving vehicle.
“However, there was a line of traffic coming towards her.
“She pulled in suddenly, causing the van driver to brake.
“The accused has lost control, resulting in coming off the road.
“She went into a field and rolled over several times before coming to a stop.
“ Her passenger suffered a fractured vertebrae. The accused also suffered significant injuries.”
‘Error of judgement’
Her solicitor told the court Baxter said it was “an error of judgment” but accepted the accident would not have occurred if she had not been driving carelessly.
“It was a horrific accident.
“She hasn’t been sleeping since and punishes herself every day over what happened.”
