‘Mr Bean’ Facebook predator from Arbroath on register for filthy chats with teenagers

Norman Mathieson admitted his illicit conduct and could have his devices seized when he is sentenced in July.

Norman Mathieson appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court.

An online sex offender from Arbroath used a “Mr Bean” Facebook profile to engage in smutty chats with female teenagers.

Social media creep Norman Mathieson thought both teenagers he was talking to were 15.

One was and the other was 18.

That did not stop him asking to buy naked photographs from one of his victims and trying to meet up for sex with the other.

Mathieson is now on the sex offenders register and will be interviewed by social workers before being sentenced in July.

Mathieson pled guilty to intentionally attempting to cause a 15-year-old girl to participate in sexual activity by offering her money in return for naked photographs of herself on March 14 and 15 in 2023.

Then, on June 18 and 19 that year, he communicated indecently with an 18-year-old woman.

He asked inappropriate questions about her sexual history, made inappropriate comments and asked her to send intimate photos, described sexual acts he wished to perform on her and asked her to meet in person to engage in sexual activity.

Mathieson’s case began on petition but was reduced to a summary complaint.

His offending took place from his old flat in Arbroath‘s Keptie Street.

Neither of his victims can be identified for legal reasons.

Facebook fiend

The 64-year-old, now of Leonard Street, pled guilty and returned to Forfar Sheriff Court last week for a narration of his offending to be read out.

Prosecutor Jill Drummond said of the 15-year-old victim, prior to messaging her, Mathieson had not had any contact with her for two years since seeing her at a funeral.

In March 2023, she received messages on Facebook messenger.

“The complainer stated that the first messages appeared to be relatively normal.

“However they became inappropriate – that he would pay her for nudes.

“The complainer asked the accused to stop and blocked the accused immediately.”

The girl then alerted her mother and police were contacted.

Mr Bean account

Mathieson’s second victim was 18 when he messaged her in June 2023.

Ms Drummond said: “At 8.44pm, the complainer was on Facebook when she received a notification that a ‘Mr Bean’ had added her as a friend.”

The teen was instantly suspicious as the account’s photo was a naked baby lying on its stomach.

She accepted the request and Mathieson immediately sent her a question mark.

As they spoke, the teenager lied to Mathieson that she was only 15.

However, that did not deter him from engaging in sexual conversation. Again, police were contacted.

Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown deferred sentencing for background reports to be prepared and placed Mathieson on the sex offenders register.

Currently on bail, he will be sentenced on July 17.
