A new Dundee theatre show will take a sideways look at Scottish history from the wild days of the Picts to furious debate around Brexit and independence.
The Union & The Crown: A Satirical Retelling of Scottish History will take the audience on a “whistlestop” tour of the country’s politics and past.
It will include sketch comedy, musical parody and folk music with a “strong political punch”.
It will chart Scotland’s path from the early days of the Picts more than 1200 years ago to landmark periods such as the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots in the 1500s and the creation of the United Kingdom.
It delves into current global issues, while probing the significant moments that led to the creation of the United Kingdom and its legacy.
The show, which has a largely Dundonian cast, will run for just two nights at Dundee West Church this Friday and Saturday, having premiered in Edinburgh at the Assembly Roxy last September.
It is being produced by Elfie Picket, an emerging Dundee-based theatre company headed up by 25-year-old Calum Kelly, from the Isle of Skye, and 24-year-old Taylor Dyson, who is from Dundee.
Calum and Taylor met at Dundee and Angus College while studying acting before they both moved on to Glasgow University for further studies.
Calum said: “We have taken quite a bit of inspiration from the Scottish theatre group 7:84 which operated in the 1970s and 80s.
“The show has had really good feedback after the shows in Edinburgh so we are really excited to bring it to our base here in Dundee.”
Taylor said: “Particularly in Dundee, we don’t think there is that much alternative theatre.
“We want to do something different and that’s what our theatre company was founded on.
“We like creating shows with a political and social voice, perhaps one that is a bit younger to most.”
Elfie Picket is best known for its successful show Ane City, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year.
The company is self-funded, meaning the pair need to work elsewhere between writing, rehearsals, performances and promoting to keep it going.
Taylor added: “The dream is to do it full-time but we have had regular shows since we started.
“We work on the side just to make sure we can continue with what we are doing.”
