A Dundee restaurant owner has delivered takeaway meals to the city’s hospital heroes on the frontline.

Ibrar Ibrahim, who owns The Goa and The Meze Grill in Broughty Ferry, said he wanted to give a “gift to the community”.

He delivered hot meals to staff at Kings Cross Hospital in Dundee to give them a boost.

He now has plans to deliver takeaways to GPs and the emergency services.

The meals which were delivered.

Mr Ibrahim has also made a pledge to provide 1,000 hot meals over the next four weeks to the city’s foodbanks, with all his staff working free of charge to cook up the feast.

He said: “As we all know the NHS staff are doing a fantastic service and a great job.

“I want to give something back to the heroes who are working in the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I phoned Ninewells Hospital and spoke to the head of catering, Carol McKenzie, and asked if it would be possible for me to deliver food for the staff, free of charge.

“She suggested that instead of doing that, I should organise takeaway meals for the staff at the end of their shift or when they go on a break, if they ever get one.”

Mr Ibrahim started his drive on Thursday evening by delivering hot meals to the staff at Kings Cross Hospital in Dundee.

He has plans to repeat the move and is also looking at reaching frontline workers in Ninewells and those working in GP surgeries and 999 staff.

“I have also spoken to Ken Linton from the foodbank in Albert Street and have organised with him to provide 1,000 meals over four weeks,” he said.

“The first 250 meals will go out on April 14 but ongoing I would like to include the emergency services, the homeless, and the people who live alone or are vulnerable, such as young families or the elderly.

“These are difficult, unprecedented times for all of us, but especially for the ones I have mentioned.

“I am perhaps luckier than most and would like to help the best I can, but it is difficult for me to reach these people.”

Takeaway firm Deliveroo has also been offering hundreds of thousands of free trips and meals to NHS staff fighting the coronavirus.
