Two Covid-19 positive patients have been admitted to Ninewells Hospital, one of which is in intensive care.

It is just over two months since the last remaining Covid-19 patient at the time was discharged from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as the first wave of the virus subsided.

Perth man and consultant orthodontist Professor Grant McIntyre was cheered by colleagues as he was wheeled out of ICU after spending 86 days fighting for his life.

The Courier understands the newly-admitted patients are linked to the virus outbreak at the 2 Sisters Chicken factory in Coupar Angus.

Speaking during the Scottish Government’s daily briefing, the First Minister said 20,056 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 68 from 19,988 the day before.

Some 15 of these new cases are in the Tayside health board area, nine in Grampian, 21 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and eight in Lanarkshire.

She said there are 257 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 –  an increase of eight in 24 hours.

Of these patients, two were in intensive care, no change from the previous day.

An NHS Tayside spokeswoman would not confirm any new admissions at the Dundee hospital.

She said: “Throughout the pandemic we have not commented on the number of Covid patients we have in our hospitals.”

Meanwhile, a suspected case of coronavirus at an Angus care home has proved negative.

A positive test had been recorded at Seaton Grove in Arbroath on Wednesday as part of the routine testing programme there, but it is understood the follow-up test on the individual returned a negative result.

Grant McIntyre left Ninewells Hospital earlier this month.
