Plans to convert a home décor store in Dundee into a low cost gym have been recommended for approval.

The proposal would see Harry Corry Interiors in Kingsway East Retail Park transformed into a health and fitness club operated by JD Sports.

Elected councillors will vote on whether to approve the plans at Monday’s Planning Committee but a report compiled by council officers has recommended they be given the green light.

Northern Ireland-based family run business Harry Corry is understood to be vacating the unit soon.

The gym would likely feature a running track, cardio areas, free weights areas, boxing area, studios, ladies gym, spin facilities, burn and tone gym activities and changing rooms.

A planning statement submitted by JD Sports says a minimum of 30 full-time jobs would be created, including managerial staff, personal and fitness trainers and cleaning/security staff.

The company estimates the wages paid to staff would generate approximately £670,000 in earnings in the local economy per year.

It would see the current use change from retail to leisure.

96 objections have been received including concerns over road congestion and pedestrian safety.

Members of the public have also said there is an overprovision of gyms in the city.

Two letters of support have been received including one from Dundee Civic Trust who say additional fitness facilities in Dundee would be beneficial.
