The sacrifice of the hundreds of Dundonians of all ages who dedicate their lives to the care of loved ones will be celebrated next month by Dundee Carers Week.

Ahead of the event, carers and representatives from Dundee Carers Partnership gathered in the City Square to launch the new campaign, What Does a Carer Look Like?

They framed their faces with empty picture frames to emphasise the fact one in eight people in Scotland care for people they love unpaid, while three in five will be a carer at some point.

Dundee Carers Week, which is part of National Carers Week and runs from June 6 to 12, will open with a free carers tea party in the City Square on Saturday June 4.

“Dundee Carers Centre takes part in the national event every year,” said deputy chief executive Tim Mineard.

“The aim is to raise awareness of the role of the carer, which is improving but still not as strong as it should be.

“It also highlights the services that a number of organisations across the city can offer to support carers.”

Tim added: “This year we are asking, What Does A Carer Look Like?

“It is so much more diverse than someone pushing a wheelchair or any of the typical caring scenarios that immediately spring to mind.

“At the end of the day we’re not precious about what people call themselves, as long as they know that help is available.”
