The newly elected rector of Dundee University, Mark Beaumont, is calling on the city’s residents to get in gear for the annual Cyclathon event.
The world-record breaking cyclist is encouraging people to take part in the Claverhouse Rotary Cyclathon, an annual charity cycle ride that takes riders on a full circle tour of Dundee.
This year Mark and riders in the event are supporting cancer charity Marie Curie, who are one of many beneficiaries the Cyclathon have raised money for over the years.
The former High School of Dundee pupil said Dundee is “blessed” with an ideal cycle route and believes that the event is a great celebration of sport and the city.
He said: “The Dundee Cyclathon is a fantastic opportunity for individuals, families, school groups and colleagues to discover the joy of cycling and, perhaps, to raise money for Marie Curie in the process.
“Our city is blessed with an ideal route which should appeal to all ages and abilities and I’d encourage everyone – novice or otherwise to get on their bike this autumn and help make the Dundee Cyclathon 2016 the best event yet.”
The event takes place on the green circular route, a cycle path that encompasses the entire city, beginning and ending in the idyllic Camperdown park.
Event organiser Ian Balgowan stressed that the Cyclathon is not a race, but a fun challenge for families and enthusiasts alike.
“This isn’t a race, it is a fun event for all the family and an ideal way to enjoy our city and the great outdoors,” he said.
“Cycling has grown in popularity in recent years so we’re hoping with Mark’s support and Marie Curie at our side we have a winning combination for 2016.”
Petra McMillan, a patron of Marie Curie, said: “We are hugely grateful to the Rotary Club of Claverhouse and Mark Beaumont for their support with the Dundee Cyclathon.
“We hope families, colleagues, school groups, novices and beginners will turn out in their droves to enjoy our beautiful city and generate some much-needed funds for local families.
“Every penny we receive will be ploughed back into delivering care to local families fighting terminal illness in cities, towns and villages right across the ‘DD’ postcode area this autumn.”
The Cyclathon has been taking place in Dundee for 15 years and in that time has raised over £250,000 for good causes across the country.
The Cyclathon takes place on Sunday September 11. To take part click here.
