Dundee man jailed for eight months after stealing bike wheels

A man who admitted stealing bike wheels and other accessories from student accommodation in Lyon Street has been jailed.

John Harris, 49, of Dundonald Street, was spotted on CCTV by security officers who were monitoring the property.

Fiscal depute Gavin Burton told the court a white mountain bike was padlocked against a bike rack in the common close and the officers saw him removing the wheels.

He said initially they presumed Harris was the owner of one of the bikes.

However, the security workers became suspicious when they saw he was using tools from a tool box to remove the wheels.

“The security officers contacted police,” Mr Burton said.

“Officers found the accused hiding behind a large bin on Brown Constable Street. He was searched and found to have pliers, Allen keys, bike lights, handlebar grips and three bike clamps.”

Harris admitted that on September 13, at Lyon Street, he stole bike wheels, lights and a quantity of bicycle accessories.

Harris was returned to prison to serve 150 days of an unexpired portion of his previous sentence and Sheriff Alastair Brown jailed him for eight months, to be served consecutively.
