Dundee couple ‘threatened to make false report of rape unless man paid money’

A couple who allegedly threatened to make a false report of rape against a man unless he paid them money will face trial accused of attempted extortion.

Daniel Wright, 34, and Gillian Cowan, 32, both of Artillery Lane in Dundee city centre, appeared for a second time on petition before Sheriff John Rafferty at Dundee Sheriff Court.

The pair are charged with the intention of menacing George Cleary between June 11 and 13 2016, at Kennet Walk in the Coldside area of the city and elsewhere unknown.

It is alleged Wright and Cowan put Mr Cleary in a state of fear and alarm and apprehension of a false report being made to police, stating that he had raped Gillian Cowan, for the purposes of extorting cash.

Wright and Cowan are both further accused of threatening him by claiming that unless he paid them money they would report to the police that he raped Gillian Cowan.

It is alleged they attempted to induce him to pay cash to them, and that they attempted to extort cash from him.

Neither Wright nor Cowan made any plea during their brief, separate appearances on Friday.

Both were fully committed for trial at a later date yet to be confirmed.

Wright was remanded in custody by the Sheriff.

Cowan was granted bail meantime.
