Thug threatened to rape Dundee cop after being detained for drink-driving

A thug has admitted threatening to rape a police officer and her family after being detained for drink-driving.

Graeme Richardson, of Kenmore Terrace, was held by police after he was found to be more than three times the drink-drive limit in Macalpine Road on Sunday.

While in custody, he spat at PC Karen Panton and shouted and swore at her, calling her, among other insults, a “speccy blonde *******”.

Richardson was later overheard making threatening remarks about PC Panton, among them that — once released — he would wait outside the police station, follow her home and rape her and her family.

Fiscal depute Marie Irvine told Dundee Sheriff Court that police attended Macalpine Road at around 8am after receiving a call about a vehicle blocking an access on the street.

When they arrived, they found Richardson at the side of the road. A breath sample taken from him recorded 77 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the limit of 22 milligrams, at which point he was taken into custody.

Ms Irvine said that later, at Dundee’s police HQ in West Bell Street, Richardson was overheard saying he would have “his boys waiting outside” to “sort her (PC Panton) out’.

She added: “Officers overheard the accused stating something similar to ‘I’m going to wait outside this place every night, follow you home, then rape you and your family’.”

An agent for Richardson said the 31-year-old had been “out of trouble” for 12 years.

However, while Sheriff Derek Reekie said Richardson’s offence of drink-driving “spoke for itself”, he took a dim view of the remarks he made at the police station.

He said: “It’s disgusting behaviour, to say the least, prolonged and repeated at different times.”

Richardson admitted driving a car with excess alcohol and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, including uttering threats of sexual violence towards PC Panton.

He was bailed while social work reports and a restriction of liberty assessment are carried out and was given an interim driving ban. Sentence was deferred until May 9.
