Dundee couple had sex beneath Tay Road Bridge in full view of passersby

A couple had sex underneath the Tay Road Bridge in full view of passersby on a Sunday afternoon.

Drug-addled Frank Watt and Cheryl Johnstone refused to stop the act despite being shouted at twice by a bridge CCTV operator while cyclists and members of the public passed close by.

Both Watt, 31 and Johnstone, 32, admitted an indecency charge at Dundee Sheriff Court today and were placed on the sex offenders register in the interim while the case was adjourned for reports and a restriction of liberty order assessment.

Fiscal depute Isma Mukhtar told the court a bridge CCTV operator saw the pair at 2.15pm on November 5 2017 sitting on a concrete wall at the foot of the public stairwell leading on to the footpath of the Tay Road Bridge.

She said: “He could see that the accused Johnstone appeared to be performing a sexual act on the accused Watt for a number of minutes.

“He left the control room and shouted at both accused to stop what they were doing. He returned to the control room and in going back to view the monitor, he saw that the accused Johnstone had resumed performing the act on Watt.

“They were then seen to pull their trousers down and engaged in full sexual intercourse with each other. As they were doing this, several members of the public had to walk past them.”

Ms Mukhtar said there was nothing in the police or CCTV report to suggest there were children in the area.

She added: “They did not stop when members of the public had gone past and the operator again shouted at them to stop what they were doing.

“But again, that did not deter them and they both carried on in the same manner. Further members of the public were then exposed to their behaviour because of their continuation of the act.

“Police were contacted and arrived at around 2.50pm where the accused were both getting their clothing pulled back up. They both appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

“Both fully admitted to police what they had been doing.”

Watt, of Tulloch Court, and Johnstone, of Hilltown Court, both pleaded guilty to a charge of public indecency.

Sheriff John Rafferty deferred sentence until April 9, continuing their bail.
