Man jailed for assaulting pregnant girlfriend after night out in Dundee

A man who assaulted his pregnant girlfriend after a drunken night out was jailed for 22 months by Sheriff Alastair Brown.

Charlie Gardiner, 34, a prisoner at Perth, admitted that he assaulted Letitia Ann Swankie, seized her by the hair, struck her head against a wall and seized her by the neck, all to her injury, in Balunie Avenue on June 8.

He further admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm, shouted and swore and uttered threats of violence at Ms Swankie and behaved in an aggressive manner.

Depute fiscal Vicki Bell told the court Gardiner had returned home drunk after a night out and accused Ms Swankie of cheating on him, calling her a derogatory term, before assaulting her.

She managed to call her mother, who heard Gardiner threatening to kill Ms Swankie.

Her mother called police and she was found outside the flat, crying and with a red mark on her head.

Sheriff Brown told Gardiner he was a “drunken boor” and said there was no alternative to a custodial sentence due to the nature of the offence and his criminal record.
