Man spent 21st birthday behind bars after police chase around Dundee streets

A “dangerous” driver spent his 21st birthday behind bars after admitting leading police on a high-speed chase.

Scott Wheeler, of Eden Terrace, Dundee, admitted driving dangerously after speeding off from officers after initially being stopped in Strathmore Avenue on August 26, failing to stop at a red light and driving on the opposite carriageway while overtaking other vehicles.

Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told Dundee Sheriff Court that Wheeler suddenly sped off down Strathmore Avenue after being stopped by police, driving along several other streets.

He was eventually pulled over at Dunsinane Avenue after the pursuit.

Solicitor Paul Parker Smith said that while Wheeler had a record, it was not a bad one.

Sheriff Lorna Drummond pointed out he was out on licence from a previous sentence and Mr Parker Smith confirmed there was an unexpired portion of that previous sentence.

“He panicked after initially stopping and made things worse for himself,” the solicitor added.

Sheriff Drummond told Wheeler: “You were out on licence after an 18-month prison sentence. This is a very serious matter that puts you in a very serious position.

“I am calling for a report and I am not granting you bail.”

Sentence was deferred until September 21.
