Man guilty of bid to abduct women close to Dundee university

A man has been found guilty of grabbing two women and pulling them towards a car in an attempt to abduct them.

Vygantas Gadeikis, 28, targeted his victims in Park Wynd, close to the University of Dundee, the city’s sheriff court heard.

He was convicted after trial of pulling Mhairi Cormack and another woman, Cherilyn Lawrie, up a set of stairs towards a car.

The Lithuanian national was also found guilty of attempting to push Ms Cormack into the car in his abduction bid.

A co-accused, Evaldas Norbutas, 29, was alleged to have pinned Ms Lawrie against a lamppost and detained her while Gadeikis tried to get Ms Cormack into the car.

However the charge against Norbutas was dropped after one of the complainers failed to identify him.

Giving evidence to the trial, Ms Cormack told the court: “The car pulled up behind us – I can’t remember how the conversation started but I remember asking the men if they were German. They said they weren’t then asked for some help with directions.

“We spoke for around five minutes and said goodbye then turned to walk down the stairs.”

The woman walked down the stairs holding hands, as they were having difficulty walking in their high heels.

Ms Cormack continued: “One of the men grabbed us by the arms and pulled us both up the steps.

“I remember being pushed towards the car. I was holding on to the car window and door as he tried to push me into the car. Cherilyn was being held over by a lamppost.”

Ms Cormack said she then saw two boys and shouted towards them and Gadeikis let her go.

She added that it was only the next day that she realised how dangerous the situation could have been.

Gadeikis, of Victoria Hotel, Lower Mill Street, Blairgowrie, was found guilty of assaulting Ms Cormack by seizing her by the arm, dragging her up stairs towards a car, chasing her, seizing hold of her, struggling with her, attempting to push her into a car and attempting to abduct her.

Sentence was deferred until July 28 for reports.
