Man found guilty of sex attacks on Dundee streets

A man has been convicted of carrying out two sex attacks in Dundee.

Romanian national Gigi Ciriblan, 37, was standing trial accused of carrying out six sex attacks in the city over an eight-day period between August 22 and August 30 2016.

He had been charged following a major police investigation which saw parts of the city centre cordoned off when the allegations came to light.

But following a seven-day trial at the High Court in Dunfermline, Ciriblan was acquitted by a jury of two rapes, one attempted rape and another sexual assault.

Ciriblan was however unanimously found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a bus stop in the Seagate on August 28 by repeatedly kissing her and touching her leg.

He was also unanimously convicted of sexually assaulting another woman four days earlier in a phone box on Arbroath Road.

While giving evidence at the trial in front of Lord Beckett, Ciriblan had admitted kissing the woman in the Seagate, but insisted he had only given her a quick stroke on the leg and it had not gone any further after realising how distressed she was.

Ciriblan, who arrived in Scotland to look for work just a month before the attacks, claimed to have never touched the woman in the phone box in Arbroath Road.

He insisted he had been attempting to call his sister when he was confronted by the angry woman.

When giving evidence, Ciriblan appeared awkward in the witness box and there were long pauses when he was asked to answer questions put to him.

Defence counsel Matt Jackson accused five of the six women who gave evidence of lying.

But advocate depute Stephen McCloy told the jury in his closing speech that the alleged victims had no reason to lie and perjure themselves.

Mr Jackson did however admit that some of his client’s behaviour had been “unpleasant and distasteful” while Mr McCloy described the Romanian’s actions as “a campaign of criminal conduct”.

But jurors said there wasn’t enough proof to convict Ciriblan on four of the charges.

They included claims that he raped a woman in Baxter Park on August 22, before sexually assaulting another woman later that same day in the area.

Ciriblan was also acquitted of raping a woman on August 28 2016 in Ladywell Avenue, as well as a charge of attempted rape two days later in a close in Morgan Place.

Ciriblan will be sentenced at a later date.
