Driver assaults man in road rage attack

A road rage driver tailgated his victim before boxing the man in, kicking his car then assaulting him.

Douglas Clark lost his temper when Christopher Bowman braked gently because he feared there was going to be a crash.

But his attemnpt to put more space between his own vehicle and Clark’s Mercedes in Dundee’s Arbroath Road led to him being subjected to an over-the-top tirade and having his car damaged and his mobile phone smashed.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Mr Bowman decided to “brake test” the driver behind him because he was so close to his bumper he was worried they would collide.

But Clark then sped past and pulled in front of Mr Bowman, before forcing him to stop.

He then got out and launched a tirade, telling Mr Bowman: “Why did you hit your brakes?

“I could have run into the back of you, you idiot.”

Fiscal depute Matthew Kerr told the court: “He became more irate and started to kick and punch the vehicle.

“He then snapped the aerial off.

“The complainer was concerned something else might happen so took a photo of the accused before mounting the pavement and driving off.

“He later returned to find the broken aerial and at that point the accused also returned and began shouting at him.

The witness again took his phone out and the accused grabbed it before throwing it against a wall, smashing the screen.

“When he was interviewed by police he said: ‘I just reacted angrily to the way he spoke to me and the insults he threw at me,’ ”

Clark, 63, of Arbroath Road, Dundee, pleaded guilty to charges of threatening and abusive behaviour, assault and vandalism.

Defence solicitor George Donnelly said: “He is a 63-year-old married man who is in full-time employment.”

Sheriff George Way deferred sentence for social work background reports until January 10.

Clark was ordered to appear on that date.
