Woman left covered in blood after ‘unprovoked’ attack by brother in Dundee flats

A 37-year-old man assaulted his sister, punching her so many times that her head was “bouncing off the floor” of a communal close.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Donald Skene also kicked his sister Shona Skene repeatedly whilst wearing steel toecapped boots.

Skene then walked off, leaving his sister lying in the communal close covered in blood while neighbours phoned an ambulance.

Fiscal depute Vicki Bell told the court Ms Skene, 42, was staying with one of her brother’s neighbours in the flat above his on Malcolm Street at the time of the offence.

She said Skene knocked on his neighbour’s door and began shouting at his sister, before leaving when asked to do so.

The fiscal said: “Around 10 minutes later the complainer and neighbour left the flat and went into the communal close to smoke a cigarette. The accused then came up the stairs and grabbed the complainer by the hair. He began to repeatedly punch her on the face. The complainer threw herself to the ground, fearing the accused would throw her down the stairs.

“Whilst she was on the floor of the communal close the accused repeatedly kicked her on the head and repeatedly punched her on the head. He was wearing steel toe-capped boots at the time.”

Skene kicked and punched Ms Skene numerous times during his “unprovoked” attack. The neighbour later told police Ms Skene’s head was “bouncing off the floor and the close wall” and that she tried to pull Skene off his sister.

Skene continued his assault until another neighbour heard shouting and came out of his flat and dragged him away.

The fiscal continued: “When the second neighbour exited his flat he saw the accused holding the complainer by the hair and punching her square in the face repeatedly.

“The neighbour stated that his intervention seemed to cause the accused to snap out of it. The accused thereafter walked down the stairs towards his own flat, leaving the complainer lying in the communal close.

“She was covered in blood and bleeding from an injury above her eye. There was also blood on the floor of the close.”

Police and paramedics were contacted and Ms Skene was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where she received treatment to facial wounds.

Skene, a prisoner at Perth, admitted assaulting Ms Skene to her injury and permanent disfigurement on December 23 2013. Sentence was deferred until July 13 for reports.
