Man stole car from Dundee Lidl car park and sold it for scrap

A man, who stole a vehicle from a car park and sold it to scrap dealers for £80, was jailed for three months at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Bruce Bennett, 34, of Elders Court, admitting stealing a car from the Lidl car park on July 8.

The court was told when the owner returned to where he had left his car, all that was left was broken glass on the ground. By the time police traced the vehicle, it had already been crushed that same day by scrap dealers.

Fiscal depute Kirsten Thomson told the court the vehicle’s owner had contacted DVLA on April 30 to declare the vehicle off the road, then parked it securely in the car park.

The fiscal said: “On July 7, the day before the offence, the owner walked passed the locus and saw his car was still there.

“At 8am the following day, the accused contacted a scrap dealers, and said he wished to sell a car and to meet him at the Lidl car park.

“A member of staff from the scrap dealers met him and offered £80 for the vehicle. The accused accepted and the member of staff asked for vehicle registration documents. The accused did not have them but had photographic evidence and the member of the staff accepted that.”

Later that same day, the car’s owner walked passed the car park and saw his car was not there and there was smashed glass.

He registered the vehicle as stolen with police, telling officers the car had been valued at £700 before he declared it off the road.

When officers traced Bennett he told them the car belonged to him.
