WATCH: Moment residents flee as huge fire started near Dundee flats

This is the moment residents were forced to flee from their homes as huge flames shot into the air near a Dundee tenement.

Firefighters were called to Foggyley Gardens just after midnight on Tuesday after a blaze engulfed a portable cabin and nearby car.

A video shows the fire shooting high into the air as locals run up the street to safety.

An investigation is now under way after police confirmed the blaze – which took nearly two hours to put out – was started deliberately.

A burnt-out car at the scene of the fire.

It is thought the cabin was at the site as part of ongoing work to the block of flats.

Resident Lynne Dailly said: “I live at the top of Foggyley and I just saw the flames coming up.

“I don’t know what happened. This is normally a good place and you wouldn’t usually see anything like this going on.

‘It was a really scary situation’

“It was a really scary situation, there’s a car that’s totally burnt out.

“When I saw it I ran down the street to check that my mum was OK because she lives closer by.”

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “We woke up after the fire had already begun.

“It must have been about 12.20am, there were already fire engines there.

“We were more worried because we’ve got a baby in the house.”

The portable cabin and nearby trees have been damaged.

Sergeant Barry Cochlan from Lochee police station said: “We are appealing for any witnesses who could help us establish the full circumstances of this incident, and help us trace the person or persons responsible.

“If you were in the area of Foggyley Gardens in the early hours of Tuesday, and saw anything suspicious, please get in touch.

“We would also ask any motorists with dashcams who were travelling through at the time to check their footage in case they have captured anything which could be of significance.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 0031 of Tuesday September 21. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received reports of a portable cabin and a car on fire on Foggyley Gardens at 12.04am on Tuesday.

“Three appliances were called to the scene, two from our Macalpine Road station and one from our Blackness Road station.

“Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.”
