Dundee flat fall death latest: Police probe early morning disturbance in nearby flat

Police investigating the discovery of a man’s body in Dundee city centre are looking into a possible early-morning disturbance in a flat nearby .

Emergency services were called to Forester Street, off Ward Road, at 6.30am on Wednesday.

It is understood the man, named locally as Steven Smeaton, had fallen from the third-floor of a building on Ward Road.

In a statement released at 5.30pm, police confirmed their probe into the death of the 33-year-old and said it was being treated as “unexplained”.

The police statement said: “Officers have been carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death, which is being treated as unexplained at this time.

“Door to door enquiries and forensic examination of the scene will be continuing this evening.

“A number of witnesses have already been traced and spoken to and police continue to appeal for information from anyone who was in the area of Forester Street between Tuesday evening (September 6) and the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, September 7).

“There was a report of a disturbance at a flat in Forester Street earlier this morning (Wednesday, September 7) at about 3.30am.

“Officers attended at that time and are keen for any further information in connection with the incident.  

“Anyone who saw or heard any activity that could assist officers with their enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.

“If you wish to provide information anonymously you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

It is understood Mr Smeaton, a former pupil of Cragie High School, lived in the Hilltown.

A police cordon was set up around the scene on Forester Street, just off the city’s Ward Road.

Workers at the BT call centre on Ward Road said they were told on Wednesday morning that a man had fallen from a window.
