A man in his fifties has been seriously injured following an industrial accident in Dundee city centre.
The 53-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after emergency crews were scrambled to North Marketgait on Friday afternoon.
Staff at NHS Tayside have described the man’s condition as “serious” following the accident which happened shortly after 3pm.
Police Scotland confirmed a joint investigation is now underway with the Health and Safety Executive.
A visible police presence remains at the scene today (Saturday) near the construction site.
One lane is currently closed heading west in the aftermath of the incident.
Major emergency response
Both lanes at North Marketgait were closed for several hours after the man was conveyed to hospital.
One passer-by said police were focusing their attention around a cherrypicker on the footpath.
He added: “After the ambulance had left the scene, more traffic police arrived.
“There were scores of officers both on the road and the path around where the incident happened.
“Police appeared to be focusing their attentions around one of the cherrypickers.
“The footpath still remains largely blocked off with machinery given the ongoing works.”
Construction works have been ongoing in and around a building close to the busy stretch of road in recent months.
One local said some of the scaffolding at the construction site had only recently been removed.

He added: “The works have been ongoing there for a wee a while now.
“I think the scaffolding has only just come down in the last week or so.
“I walk home that way most days.
“All I heard was sirens on my way towards the Hilltown.
“They immediately closed the road off at the Ladywell Roundabout heading towards Lochee.
“Paramedic teams were near to where all the construction works have been taking place.
“More police arrived in the aftermath of the ambulance leaving, there must have been six police vehicles at one point.
“I’m saddened to hear someone has suffered serious injuries.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 3.15pm on Friday 25 March, 2022, police received a report of a man being injured in an industrial accident on North Marketgait, Dundee.
“A 53-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as serious.
“An joint investigation is under way involving Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive.”
