Crowds gathered on the streets on Wednesday night for an evening of entertainment, kick-starting a packed programme of activities lasting for two weeks.
The night began at Dundee West Church with the West End Christmas Concert, with musical contributions from primary and secondary schools and hosted by Gordon Sharp.
The performance also included The Notables, a local community choir. Following the concert, the Mains of Fintry Pipe Band led everyone from the church to Seabraes for the lights switch on.
Loadsaweeminsinging, a community singing group based at the Dundee Rep Theatre, performed by the tree to warm up the crowd before Lord Provost Bob Duncan, ably assisted by Santa and his sleigh, turned on the light displays.
