How the new young person's home on Southampton Road will look.

A new home for vulnerable young people in Dundee will cost £3 million, it has been revealed.

A contract for the construction of the new council-run facility is set to be approved by councillors next week.

The home on Southampton Road previously gained planning permission, despite concerns from some locals about increased noise, overlooking of nearby homes and the impact on residential amenity.

If the contract is given the green light, the facility will be built by Robertson Construction on the site of a retirement home that was demolished in 2020.

Work could begin on the project later this month.

The single-storey building will provide en-suite bedrooms, shared living space, a dining room, an activities room, a kitchen and accommodation for staff.

Stewart Hunter, convener of the children and families committee, said: “When it is completed next spring this new home will provide up to six young people with a nurturing environment.

Home needed to replace existing facility

“It is needed to replace one of our existing homes and will help some of the most vulnerable young people in the city to grow up in a supportive and caring setting.”

The facility will be staffed 24 hours a day.

There are more than 460 care experienced young people in Dundee in foster homes, with families and in residential settings.

The contract will be discussed at the same meeting where councillors will be asked to approve more than £6m of work at the Olympia.
