Dundee railway station redevelopment is still on track, say contractors

The new railway station concourse and hotel development will be finished by the end of the year.
The new railway station concourse and hotel development will be finished by the end of the year.

The £28 million  redevelopment of Dundee Railway Station is still on track to for completion by the end of the year.

Construction work on the hotel and new station halted for two weeks over the festive period but has now resumed and is still scheduled to finish by December.

As well as a new concourse and ticketing office, the redevelopment will include a three-storey, 120-bedroom Sleeperz hotel above the railway station. The new concourse will also feature space for shops and a cafe.

Building work on the site began in October 2015 and the curved frame of the new concourse building and hotel was erected late last year.

Work on the site stopped completely over the Christmas and New Year break but contractors Balfour Beatty said this had always been factored into their plans.

A spokeswoman for Balfour Beatty said: “We can confirm that works to the Dundee Station and Hotel redevelopment ceased for a two week period over Christmas, in line with standard industry practice.

“Work has now recommenced on site, with focus turning to the concreting of the suspended floor slabs and the main external scaffold.

“Construction work remains on schedule for completion in December 2017.”

Dundee Railway Station is a key part of the city’s £1 billion waterfront redevelopment, which includes the construction of the V&A design museum opposite the station.

The Kengo Kuma-designed building is also scheduled to be competed by the end of the year before opening to the public in 2018.

The new railway concourse is being built on the site of the extension added to the original Victorian station buildings in the 1960s.

The building has been designed to create an impressive new landmark within the Central Waterfront development and as an attractive new gateway into the city for rail passengers.

Operators are currently being sought for the retail, cafe and office opportunities within the ground and first floor of the building.
