Around 100 new homes could be built on the site of the former Hilltown Indoor Market after early plans were approved by Dundee City Council.
A pre-application notice (PAN) for a residential development on the Main Street site has been approved by the council following community consultation.
The decision paves the way for housing firm Springfield Properties to put forward a full plan for the development, which is expected before the end of the year.
The developer says retail opportunities will also be available.
The Hilltown site has lain empty since the indoor market was destroyed by a fire in 2018.
In 2019, development firm Sigma Property Holdings put forward plans to build a leisure park at the abandoned space.
The application – which included plans for a bowling alley, bar, soft play area and restaurant – was approved by the council in 2021, however Sigma has now gone into administration.

Tom Leggeat, managing director of Springfield Partnerships, says community consultation has so far been positive.
He said: “Our plans for Main Street will transform a vacant brownfield site in the heart of Dundee with around 100 energy efficient homes, with retail opportunities, in partnership with a local housing association.
“Although we’re at the very early stages in the process, the designs include a large area of open green space at the core of the development, with tree lined streets, landscaping and walking and cycle routes that connect to the wider area.
“We received positive feedback from the community at our recent public consultation events and we’re busy finalising our plans which we aim to submit to the council later this year.”
