Two forensic scientists from Dundee University are showcasing their work to children in a CBBC show.

Dr Lucina Hackman and Dr Catriona Davies, from the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID), are featuring in an episode of All Over the Workplace on Wednesday, February 8.

The episode follows two young children, Edwin and Leila, who will take on the role of forensic scientists under the guidance of Dr Hackman and Dr Davies.

They will work on a scenario that bones of unknown origin have washed up on Monifieth beach. They have to find out what the bones are, and where they came from.

Dr Davies said: “We were asked to put together a scenario to help the children get a better understanding of what it is we do.

“It was up to them to figure out if the bones were human or animal.

“It was great to have Edwin and Leila in the lab. They were very inquisitive and asked lots of really important questions.”

Dr Hackman added: “This programme is great at encouraging children to think about different career choices.

“Getting the younger generation enthused about science and anatomy is really important and we are grateful to have been given this opportunity from CBBC.”

Dundee’s Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification is considered one of the top institutions for studying human anatomy, forensic human identification, disaster victim identification and forensic and medical art.

In 2013 the centre was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education, in recognition of `world class excellence’.

All Over the Workplace: Forensic Scientist will be on the CBBC channel at 7:30pm.

The programme, presented by Alex Riley, aims to give children an insight into a range of careers open to them when they grow up.

Other occupations previously featured on the show include author, politician, games designer, police officer and a musical theatre actor.
