The opening night of a popular Scottish play set to perform at Dundee Rep theatre has had to be rearranged following a technical hitch.

An ensemble production of The Steamie was due to go ahead on Monday evening, but has been pushed back after production issues on current production of August: Osage County.

Dundee Rep have not revealed details of what has caused the set back, but it is understood the set of the critically acclaimed August: Osage County has damaged the stage-floor of the award winning theatre, resulting in a knock-on effect for other productions.

Monday’s show has been rearranged for the following Sunday and customers who bought tickets for what was to be opening night have been advised they can attend the re-scheduled matinee date in the same seats, apply for a full refund or transfer their tickets for different seats on a different evening free of charge.

A spokesperson for Dundee Rep said: “Following the cancellation of our first preview performance of our current production – August: Osage County – the show is now up and running. However, the technical issue we experienced prior to the opening of the show has had a knock-on effect for our next visiting production of The Steamie.

“We were very sorry to inform our customers that due to this previous technical issue, we have had to cancel the first night of The Steamie on Monday September 18.

“This is not a decision we took lightly, but for the good of the production and the rest of the run we need to ensure the technical issue is properly resolved before we open the show.

“We have been working closely with the producers of The Steamie and arranged an extra performance at the Rep on Sunday September 24 at 2.30pm.

“Monday night’s customers have been informed and offered either the same seats for the new Sunday performance, a full refund, or tickets to another performance during the run at no extra cost.

“We would like to thank Neil Laidlaw Productions and the cast and crew of The Steamie who have been so supportive in enabling us to add an extra performance.”

August: Osage County was the first production of new Rep artistic director Andrew Panton.

The Steamie is set in a Glasgow wash house in the 1950s, with this year’s production a special 30th anniversary performance.
