A man detained in connection with an alleged murder in a Broughty Ferry suburb remained under hospital supervision last night.

The 44-year-old was understood to be receiving treatment under police guard.

No charges have yet been filed following the incident, which happened at a block of flats on Friday night.

Police said they were treating the death of Mark Johnston, who is from Montrose, as murder.

Residents at the Nursery Road high rise reported hearing raised voices on Friday night.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said there had been “a lot” of blood on the scene.

Another Nursery Road neighbour, Magaret Anderson who lives across from the tower block, said she was shocked by the events in the usually tranquil suburb.

She said: “There were a lot of police cars outside, but my husband and I certainly did not even contemplate that something as serious had happened.

“It was confusing, as there were fireworks going off as the police arrived.”

Kevin Beaton, 56, who lives in the block where the alleged murder is said to have taken place, said he heard shouting coming from a nearby flat.

He said: “It got louder and louder and then there was silence — it was eerie.

“I think I knew straight away that something terrible had happened.

“There was so much shouting and then just that awful silence. After silence for a little while, a dog began barking and that went on and on.

“Next thing there were police everywhere. I also saw an ambulance but I never saw anyone being put into the back of it.

“This is a horrible thing to have happened.”

Police maintained a presence outside the flats throughout yesterday while investigations continued.

The building was reopened but a major events vehicle remained on the scene.
