The block was cordoned off after Mark Johnston's sudden death.

Police have scaled down their presence at a block of flats in Broughty Ferry which was the scene of a suspected murder last week.

Life appeared to be returning to normal for the residents, who were asked to stay inside their building for 48 hours while police and forensics officers carried out detailed investigations into the events on Nursery Road on Friday night.

Washing hung on lines in a small back garden to the rear of the high rise yesterday and a solitary police officer stood guard on the first floor, where Montrose man Mark Johnston died.

A major events van also remained parked at the front of the building.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Johnston, 53, in his home town in Angus.

Neighbour John Provan, who lives on Ferry Street in Montrose, said: “He was very polite. He would take his hat off to you in the morning if you were sweeping the landing, that sort of thing.

“He would go to Dundee quite a lot. I saw him waiting for the bus sometimes to get there.

“I am totally shocked about what has happened.

“The police were here all day Saturday and Saturday night, and then into Sunday.”

A 44-year-old man was detained following Mr Johnston’s death on Friday. He is currently under police supervision at a city hospital.

No formal charges have been brought and police said they could not give a timescale for when that might happen.

Meanwhile, police have said there were no suspicious circumstances following the discovery of a man’s body on Dundee Law on Monday night.

The man is believed to have been in his 40s. Officers are in the process of formally identifying him.

Officers and paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to the Law shortly before 5.30pm.

A dog walker discovered the body in a wooded area close to Law Crescent allotments and the area was cordoned off.
