Broadband ‘down’ across swathes of Dundee

Areas of Dundee have been without internet access since Friday.
Areas of Dundee have been without internet access since Friday.

Thousands of city residents have been left without phone and broadband services in Dundee following a suspected cabling fault, it has been reported.

Virgin Media customers have been without internet since early Friday morning and are reportedly being “left in the dark” by the company as to what is happening with their service.

It is understood as many as 2,000 households might be affected by the loss of broadband service.

Services in the DD2 area of the city have been affected and it is reported “safety conditions” and “poor weather” might be hampering efforts to repair the faults.

Some have been affected by the outage for more than 36 hours, with customers complaining of their television, phone and internet services currently being out of use.

Users have received notifications updating them repairs are being carried out, but each deadline promised by the company has reportedly passed without the issues being resolved.

Brian McHardie, who lives in the Hawkhill area, said he spoke to an engineer on Friday who had been dispatched to try and alleviate the problems.

“We noticed the internet was not working early on Friday morning, so it could have gone down either late Thursday evening or anytime around then,” he said.

“Three Virgin Media engineers vans were parked outside my house on Friday night and one of the engineers thought as many as 2,000 homes in Dundee might have been affected.

“I was eventually able to download an app, using my phone’s 4g data, which has kept us updated about how repairs are going. Four deadlines have come and gone but the internet, phone and television services are still not on.

“We appreciate it is a big job, which might take a while to fix, if the problem is as wide reaching as the engineer suggested.”

Garry Fraser, who lives in the Ninewells area, said: “I have been asking for updates from Virgin Media since Friday, but no-one seems to know what is happening.

“I even visited the shop in the Overgate but unfortunately they weren’t able to say exactly what was going on.

“Sometimes things go down, and we understand that, but the lack of information from Virgin has been a bit of a bug bear.

“Our son is autistic and the lack of internet for the house has been quite unsettling for him.”

West End councillor Bailie Fraser Macpherson said Virgin had communicated to him there was an issue with services in the area, but were unable to say what was wrong or how many people had been affected with a loss of service.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “We apologise to our customers in Dundee currently experiencing issues with their services and we are working hard to fix the issue as quickly as possible.”
