Dundee United hands out 400 season tickets to disadvantaged children

Disadvantaged young people will have the chance to watch football for free after Dundee United gave away 400 season tickets.

For over a decade the club, its supporters, the United for All charity  – now DUCT – and Dundee City Council have joined forces to give away free season tickets for Tannadice.

This year, youngsters will also have the chance to sign up to Dundee United`s new “Junior Tangerines” supporters club as part of the initiative.

On Friday Dundee United associate director Colin Stewart was joined at the stadium by Lord Provost Ian Borthwick, Children and Families Service executive director Paul Clancy, Mike Martin DUFC chairman and David Dorward DUCT chairman to present the season tickets.

Mr Borthwick said: “In Dundee we are committed to getting it right for every child  and their families.

“This means no matter your background or circumstances, children, young people and families should have the same opportunities and chances as anyone.

“We have had excellent feedback from children and parents who attended last year.

“There are huge benefits to the children and families who use these tickets.

“It creates time for families to bond together, incentivises participation and achievement from our young people and allows some our most deprived children to access the same activities and experiences as their peers.

“These tickets start the journey, not only of a lifelong attachment to Dundee United, but of pride and a connection to the city of Dundee itself.”

The United for Kids appeal was originally suggested by exiled fan Dr Andy Holt while he was living in Canada and was launched at the end of June 2005, with the club pledging to match every penny donated to the appeal by fans.

Mr Dorward, said: “This initiative is so worthwhile, and we are proud to continue to support it.

Creating opportunities for these youngsters is only possible with the continued generosity of the United fans.”

Mr Martin added: “The club are very proud of this longstanding initiative and are very happy to again provide the tickets to the individual families identified by staff at the council’s children  and families service.”
