Two soap stars have shown their support for a Dundee tourism campaign.

Emmerdale actors Jeff Hordley and Zoe Henry donned “Sunny Dundee” glasses, said to have been handed to them by local businessman Chris van der Kuyl, while holidaying in Ibiza.

The couple, who play Cain Dingle and Rhona Goskirk in the well-loved and long-running British TV show, appeared to be enjoying the sunshine off the coast of the Balearic island with the Dundonian.

Hordley’s mum hails from Dundee and he considered it his second home, with several family members said to still live in the city.

On Sunday Hordley posted to Twitter: “Amazing weekend in Ibiza with @ZoeHenry03 Thanks to @chrisvdk for bringing us our #SunnyDundee glasses!”

Mr van der Kuyl said: “Awesome to have you guys with us and clearly it will be as sunny as this in #SunnyDundee next time you are up.”

The Sunny Dundee campaign was launched ahead of the 2018 summer, which was expected to bring a record numbers of tourists to the area.

And last week it was reported that there had been a rise of almost 10% in the number of overnight visitors to Dundee, leading to a £172 million contribution to the local economy.

As residents of Scotland’s only south facing city, locals are said to enjoy more sunshine than most in the country.

Free Sunny Dundee sunglasses have been handed out out at locations across the area throughout the summer, with people urged to post photos of themselves wearing them to social media.

Re-tweeting Hordley’s post, the Dundee City Twitter account stated: “#SunnyDundee reached Emmerdale via Ibiza”.
